Beyond the Booth: Why I Started Bryan Strategy Lab

The story behind Bryan Strategy Lab: what 25 years of DJing weddings and galas taught me about small business owners, and why I help them show up online.

This is the first post in a little corner of the blog I'm calling Beyond the Booth. Most of what I write here is about DJs, photo booths, and throwing a good party, because that's the work. But every so often I want to talk about the other side of running a small business as a woman in this industry, the lessons, the mistakes, the stuff nobody hands you a manual for. This is one of those.

Quick answer: Bryan Strategy Lab is my second company. It helps small business owners get their strategy and their website sorted, usually as one clean page that actually brings in customers. It's completely separate from my event work at JJ Rock Entertainment. I started it because after 25 years of working events, I kept meeting owners with great businesses and no way to show it online.

The pattern I couldn't stop noticing

Here's the thing about DJing corporate galas, fundraisers, and brand activations for a couple of decades: you meet everybody. Not just the couple or the company. You meet the caterer, the florist, the woman who made the centrepieces, the guy whose bakery did the dessert table. Vendors talk to each other all night while the guests are dancing.

And over and over, I'd hear a version of the same thing. Someone would tell me about their business, and it would be genuinely good. Real skill, real care, real customers who loved them. Then I'd look them up later and their online presence would be a single dusty Facebook page, or a website that made their beautiful work look like an afterthought. The business was strong. The way they showed up online was not.

That gap bugged me. Because I know exactly how it feels. When I started JJ Rock, I had to figure out how to make a small, local, female-led company look like somebody you'd actually book. Nobody did it for me.

What events taught me about business

Running events for 25 years is basically a crash course in a few things that turn out to matter everywhere:

    • Reading a room in five seconds. You learn to figure out fast what people actually want, not what they said they wanted. That's most of strategy right there.
    • One clear message beats ten clever ones. A packed dance floor happens when you commit to a vibe, not when you play a bit of everything for everyone. Same with a business. Try to be for everybody and you're memorable to nobody.
    • The first impression is the whole game. People decide about your event in the first ten minutes and about your website in about three seconds. You do not get those seconds back.

Somewhere along the way I realised the thing I was good at helping event clients with, cutting the noise and getting to the point, was the exact thing those vendors needed for their businesses.

So I started Bryan Strategy Lab

Bryan Strategy Lab is the name. Bryan is my last name, so it sits right next to JJ Rock the way it should. What it does is simple: I help small business owners get clear on their strategy and turn it into a website that works, usually a single focused page that tells your story and gets people to reach out. No 40-page sites nobody reads. No jargon. Just the clear version of what you already do well.

I want to be straight about one thing, because I never want a couple planning their wedding to get confused. Bryan Strategy Lab is a separate studio. It is not part of your DJ or photo booth booking, it does not change anything about how JJ Rock works, and you will never get a website pitch when you're trying to plan a party. Two different companies, same founder. If you're here for entertainment, you're in exactly the right place and nothing changes.

    Who it's actually for

It's for the caterer, the florist, the bookkeeper, the coach, the tradesperson, the owner who knows their work is good but knows their website isn't doing it justice. If that's you, and you'd rather talk to someone who's actually run a small business through the messy parts than a big agency that'll disappear after launch, that's who I built it for. You can take a look at Bryan Strategy Lab whenever you're curious. No pressure, just there if you need it.

    Back to the booth

That's the story. I still DJ. I'm still in the booth on Saturday nights, because I love it and I'm not going anywhere. Beyond the Booth is just me being honest that there's more than one thing keeping me busy, and that the lessons from one feed the other.

If you're planning an event, let's talk about that first. Tell me your date and I'll get you a custom quote within 24 hours. Reach out here, or read more about how I plan a night. I got you, on the dance floor and beyond it.
